Printer problems

I have just had to do a reload of Windows XP and after some minor problems I
am getting things sorted again. One problem remains though and that is my
printer won't work. It is and Epson R800. I have downloaded the drivers for
it from the Epson site and they unpack and it looks as though something is
going to happen but it doesn't. I go into Control Panel and sure enough my
R800 is shown as the default printer. However when I interrogate further it
seems that the R800 is connected via the LPT1 port, which it isn't as it is a
USB. No amount of reinserting the USB gets it to plug and play. All I get is
a message telling me that there is a USB device that is unrecognised and has
malfunctioned. How can I get the printer to be a USB that is recognized and
functions and not on the LPT1 port? I have looked in device manager and there
are no printers! Thanks

Did you go to your PC maker's website and download the drivers for your
model PC after the reload, or did you reload it from a manufacturer's
restore disk? Are your USB ports being recognized in device manager as what
they really are? If they're USB2, they'll show as Enhanced under Universal
Serial Bus Controllers. If they don't show as Enhanced, then the correct USB
drivers are not installed (if your PC supports USB2).

After that is correct, if the printer still isn't being recognized, unplug
the printer from the PC, uninstall the Epson software, reboot, then install
the Epson software. Do NOT plug in the printer until the installation is
complete, or until the installation says to. After the installation, reboot
and plug the printer in then and see if it's recognized.

Thank you gentlemen it is working now with the combination of what you both
said. I did download the drivers from the Epson site and even though my
Device manager does not tell me that my USB's are enhanced it now works OK.
My PC handbook tells me that I have USB 2 ports so I hope that is so. My
Device Manager describes them as 5 off Intel (R) 82801 FB/FBM USB UNiversal
Host Controller 2658 I have a generic hub and a USB Composite Device and a
mass storage device and now a Printing Support and then 5 USB Root Hubs. Not
anything about Enhanced but I hope that you tell me that some of these or all
of these are the same?
Any way you have got it working now so that is good. Thanks

You're welcome. The "Printing Support" is the usb attached printer
handler. The "PC handbook tells me that I have USB 2 ports" part likely
refers to the physical connections on the motherboard.

There is nothing about "enhanced" in my Device Manager either,
but my Epson works perfectly.
