Windows XP.. loosing keyboard control

Twice in two days: Key board is semi-dead. Can't "system restore".. programs
open and I can gain access to the first tab.. if I want to go further have to
open in another window.
When I "minimize" system system will not allow maximize without clicking
"restore"..
Can't type to search.. can't e mail..

Today I was able to restore to Yesterday[when it was working] .. working
right now but fear is strong that it is on verge of dying. I try to restore
and calendar will not move back to any month beyond March.

Thanks Mark.. another issue.. I am not too computer savvy.. know enough to mess one up. In regard to the directions. Should I save files or just applications? Or both?... should I reload first then run repair or ... repair then reload? I have back up program CD's [or they are accessible] for the applications but files data are not all saved.. if what you sent is as simple as it appears perhaps I will not screw it up further?
thanks.. Tricky too
