Windows XP home SP-2 reinstall fails on Dell Dimension 4600 PC

After doing some major virus eradication issues, one of my clients received a
MS systray notification to install a patch for her Internet Explorer on her
SP2 Dell system. When attempting to run the patch, she was informed her
installation of SP-2 was unstable and she followed this instruction to remove
SP-2 from their system via the Add/Remove Programs.

I took a Microsoft Copy of SP-2 update over tonight to save her from having
to download it online, and when I put the Disk in it copied all the necessary
files to complete the upgrade, and when prompted I rebooted. Windows XP
Booted normally, but the SP-2 upgrade must of failed because in Gen
properties of "my computer" it still shows SP 1. What happened?? I seem to
recall SP-2 upgrade being similar to an Installation.

This part has me confused, "... she was informed her installation of SP-2

What informed her of this instability?

I'm very Sorry I wasn't so clear on what transpired in my first post. I'd
spent two days removing 122 Viruses from this neighbor of mines computer. It
was as clean as a whistle and running good. She had this notification icon
(little yellow shield on Systray.) that I couldn't turn off. So I opened it
up and Instead of doing an express update, I clicked on custom install to see
what updates were being queued for download. There were 2 patches from
Microsoft Update listed with supporting KBXXXXXX numbers. The first patch
was for Microsofts AntiSpyware tool. The 2nd patch was something for Internet
Explorer - concerning problems encountered with browsing on SP2 systems after
the patch for MS 04-38 vunerability issue had been installed. It stated that
before the patch would be applied that it would check the SP-2 installations
stability before installing the patch, but would abort if there were problems
found. Since It could not complete patching - a windows dialog box popped up

A virus attack mandates a complete "clean install".
Why? Read the following:
