Windows XP Home Edition SP-2 Garbage

I tried installing Service Pack-2 on a desktop (Intel
Pentium 4, 3.0 GHZ, with 1 GB Ram, 160 GB Hard Drive and
got into all kinds of problems. First of all none of the
virus protection (Norton) or Trend Micro was compatible.
Then I got into problems trying to access the internet. I
restored the computer to XP SP-1 and everything is back to
normal. I also tried installing SP-2 on my laptop and got
similar problems. The product is the usual garbage that
microsoft has been cranking out lately. Obviously they
have not tested it very well, or their software testers
were on vacation when they rushed out this release.
Complete, utter garbage!!!!!!!

So why don't you switch to Linux if Microsoft puts out such garbage?

I do have Linux Red Hat 9.0 installed as a dual boot on
both machines - I have had too many unpleasant experiences
with Microsoft to trust them to deliver a workable
product.

Me too. It's good to have a backup OS.

But I use Fedora Core 2. However, I will soon change
because Fedora is too bleeding edge for me. I'm wasting
too much time just doing updates.

Very odd indeed. I have XP HE and Norton Anti-virus. Both were installed when
XP was released almost three years ago. Since then I have not had one single
problem with any patches or updates including Beta testing of SP2. Could it
be that all one needs to know to get SP2 to work is have their system updated
including all hardware and software. I know this means a lot of work on your
part by going to each and every manufacturers site and getting the latest
patches and updates before installing XP SP2 but, oh wait a minute, sorry,
that would mean that you wouldn't have anything to blame on Microsoft. oops.
Hey bonehead. Microsoft is not responsible for all software and hardware on
the market nor your lack of inteligence or skill in using their OS. {]:~(

Oh, there's nothing wrong with updates, but in the Linux world, you could
spend
your entire life updating your software. New versions of everything come out
once
a week, and they all depend on the latest updates of the Linux equivalents
of dll's, each
of which are maintained by a different group. Some of these updates are only
available
in source code form, etc.

Geez, I was blaming everything on Microsoft, that's not right? I thought
they were to blame
for high unemployment, the war in Iraq, Bush's IQ, Kerry's IQ, my IQ(such as
it is), Taxes,
low performance in schools, Kobe Bryant's problems, etc. Shall I go on?

I don't think that updating is enough. You have to otherwise keep your OS in
good shape.
Avoiding viruses, spyware, other malware. Running reputable Applications,
drivers, etc.

I've got two computers that have had SP2 on them since Aug 9, and have had
no real problems.
Have had two near misses, though, although I can't firmly pin them on SP2.
Can't give any
good reason for my success. I have installed lots of freeware, have surfed
sites all over the
internet, don't keep up to date with drivers, don't scan for viruses,
malware often enough, don't
defrag often enough, etc. Do have my machine pretty well protected against
malware and attacks, I think(AV, Firewall, Antispyware, popup blocker,
cookie manager, etc)
I don't open e-mail attachments unless I know what is in them(and after
scanning). Maybe I've just
held my mouth right.

What versions of Norton or Trend Micro were you using? There are updates
available from Symantec for their products.

Otherwise, you may want to read up on the Windows Firewall. That could be
your problems with Internet access. Do you not run a firewall on Linux?

Did you run NAV Live Update before installing SP-2? There is an update
for Norton on there.

If the CPU is a Prescott core, Google XP2 Prescott for a solution to a
problem with *Intel's* microcode.
