Windows XP Explorer: how to restore "Text Document" to New... list

J

JPCMISC

I want to create a new ASCII text file within a folder (like a Notepad file).
But somehow, in the last few months, my Explorer window only gives me the
option to create a new "Text", which results in an error when I select it.
It used to give me the option of creating a new "Text Document". The error
it gives when I select "Text" is this:

Unable to create the file "New Text.*"
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

So, how do I fix this so that it knows to create a new .txt file in my
folder? The other options it lists, like Word docs, Excel docs, etc., all
still work as before.

Ramesh,
I tried this just now and it did not work.
Note that I do NOT need to fix the file 'association' (I can open up
existing text files with no problem using Notepad, Wordpad, etc), but I need
to fix 'whatever' makes Explorer show only "Text" in the right-clicked pop-up
'New' file list, so that it shows "Text Document" instead and thus lets me
create a .txt file (called "New Document.txt" or something).
Any other ideas?

From what I've read, TweakUI for XP might fix it:

"Try Tweakui for XP. It is one of the MS powertoys created for XP and
can be downloaded from here
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp "

JP,

Note that the "New" Text document setting in a part of file class / file type associations, and hence the suggestion. May be you ant to reboot once for the change to take effect. If that does not help, try this:

1. Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

2. Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
3. Double-click "FileExtInfo.exe" to run it.
4. Select .TXT file type from the list box
5. Click "View file association report"
6. Copy the contents of the report and include it in your reply.

Hi JP,

The file class settings seem to be correct. I'm wondering if this problem has to do with shell extensions. Try the steps under "Method 2" in this page:

Note that the "New" Text document setting in a part of file class / file type associations, and hence the suggestion. May be you ant to reboot once for the change to take effect. If that does not help, try this:

1. Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

2. Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
3. Double-click "FileExtInfo.exe" to run it.
4. Select .TXT file type from the list box
5. Click "View file association report"
6. Copy the contents of the report and include it in your reply.

Ramesh,
I tried this just now and it did not work.

I want to create a new ASCII text file within a folder (like a Notepad file).
But somehow, in the last few months, my Explorer window only gives me the
option to create a new "Text", which results in an error when I select it.
It used to give me the option of creating a new "Text Document". The error
it gives when I select "Text" is this:

Unable to create the file "New Text.*"
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

So, how do I fix this so that it knows to create a new .txt file in my
folder? The other options it lists, like Word docs, Excel docs, etc., all
still work as before.

That didn't work either. Here's what I did:
Ran shexview.exe, and came up with a list of nine non-Microsoft Context Menu
items.
Disabled five of them and rebooted.
Problem wasn't fixed so I re-enabled these five and disabled the other four
and rebooted.
Problem still wasn't fixed so I assume this wasn't the cause.

Do you know precisely from what/where in Windows the right-clicked New menu
text content is derived? Could knowing where this pointer is help at all?

JP,

The (default) value need not contain any data in this case.

Another thing that can be tried out:

Download/Install/Run TweakUI
Click "Templates" and delete the entry named "Text Document"
Then press "Create" to create a new text document entry using a template file.
