WINDOWS VISTA OUTLOOK EXPRESS 0x800C006C

Since a few days I can't send mail anymore. I always get this error:
An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800C006C
Who can tell me what the cause is of this error. Till now everything works
fine with Outlook Express. I still can receive mail but I can't answer them
or send new mail.

Go to Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced and check the server
numbers and fix them if they are incorrect. Try clicking the Use Defaults
button there.

Steve,

The numbers are 110 for the incoming and 25 for outgoing mail. The same as
in Outlook. There, in Outlook 2007 beta, I still can send mails with the same
settings. This is very strange, because sending mail normally always works
without problems instead of receiving mails, where you need a username and
password.
So, problem still remaining.

Regards,
Christophe

I don't know why it is saying port 0 in the error then. If you have
antivirus software, try disabling it.

One of those errors, and I think it's that one, always says port 0 no matter
what port it's set to.

Even when the AntiVirus, PC-cillin Internet Security 14 is shut down, sending
mails is not working.

Yeah, I seem to remember that.

I have the same problem with my ISP's newsgroup. I get the message:
An Unknown Error has Occurred

Configuration:

Protocol: NNTP
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 80004005

When I check the properties of the newsgroup it shows Server Port Number as
119 (as it should), and the server name is corect (news.charter.net). The
interesting thing is that the Microsoft Communities Newsgroup works properly.

I found the bug . . . if (under the connection tab) I uncheck the "Always
connect to this account using:" everything works fine.

Hi Steve

Sorry to be ignorant but I was under the impression that Outlook Express
will not run with Vista?

How can I download a form of OE that runs in VISTA? I am trying to transfer
to Windows Mail and having major problems

Thanks

Mike

I have Vista and it came with MS Mail.
I ran the Easy Transfer from my old machine and now when I click on mail the
window shows Outlook Express provided by Comcast.
Did I just change email programs OR are they the same with different names?

If you go to your Sent Items folder and hightlight a message, press Ctrl+F3
and you will see that the mail program you used is:

Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16386

What you have is the "branding" in Outlook Express was also carried over.
Try this:

Open the registry editor (Start/Run and type: regedit). Go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail
and look in the right hand pane for a value called "WindowTitle" and if
found, right click it and select Delete. That should remove it.

Please post back with info as to whether or not this solves your problem.
Good luck.

You are absolutely correct!! After a restart I now have Windows Mail in the
title. Ctrl+F3 shows as you stated below.
Windows mail and Outlook express are two different programs. Correct??
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the feedback and glad it helped. This is the first time I've
heard of that problem using Windows Mail. Glad it remained as simple as it
ever was to fix but I could not check since I don't have any machines that
have been "branded" in quite a few years since I never install any software
from an ISP.

Hi, jra.

Yes, OE and WM are different programs. But WM inherited a lot from OE,
especially in the appearance and the "look and feel".

OE showed up about 10 years ago; it was first called Microsoft Mail and
News. (You may have noticed and wondered why the executable file was
msimn.exe.) The program was extensively re-written for Vista and the name
was changed to Windows Mail. On the surface, it looks much the same as OE,
but there are many changes "under the hood", especially in the database file
system.

I am having this problem as well. There's no rhyme or reason to it -- it's
sporadic -- sometimes the email goes out and sometimes it doesn't. And
NOBODY understands Windows Vista. What is /improved/ about this program --
can anybody tell me?
