windows vista media center

I am new at this
I am having real trouble with media center on vista.
xp media was great I could watch my backed up movies TV series .
it will play a DVD if I put into the cd/dvd drive but if have previously
recorded a movie off of cable it does not recognize the file ,also if I use
a external hard drive for backed up movies it does not see the file and I
believe it should . tried all codec's that I could that I trusted k-lite
321/ vista codec's . I broke down and bought Nero 8 just so I could watch
movies and such I really want the media center to work I love it it worked
for me. is there any service pack other than the last one I loaded just this
week end I thought it would of helped well guess not. I want to go back and
use xp media center since vista mucked it all up. but I had to buy a new pc
and well that is what I got
