Maybe I can help, but please post back if it works. If you have an install
or files you need to keep, you probably will not want to do this!!!!

It appears to me that Vista leaves something on the hard drive during a
failed installed that messes it up for other installs. I just spent a few
hours experimenting with this and it seems if I set the partition to not
active, I could boot from the DVD again. So what I have been doing, is
using Fdisk to delete the partition, and then recreating it. Make sure you
don't allow Fdisk to make it active, which it asks to do if you agree to
allow the entire drive to be used for the partition. I did not format the
partition either.

Then when installing Vista, the DVD would boot because the hard drive
partition was not active so Vista did not try to boot to the failed install.
I just let Vista do it's thing with no special disc functions, such as
formatting, during the install.

Some folks have been having problems reaching the "Boot to DVD" option, and
I now know why. To get around that situation, if the partition is not
active, the DVD will boot without a prompt.

I have not tried this in XP-it may be different. I also don't have other
files on my hard drive I need to keep, so deleting the partition did not
bother me. There may be other ways of doing the same thing, but this is the
procedure I will use.

There are some programs that will set a partition as inactive, but I don't
know which ones they are. You might do a Google search and I will do some
more research. I tried Partition Magic, but it doesn't appear to have that
capability. Fdisk, it seems, can only set a partition to active and not the
reverse.

if you formatted your hard drive to install vista, then you need to format it again to install XP again.

the boot information for XP is missing.

if you burned the dvd at a speed higher than 2X that is probably the problem with the dvd.

Were you attempting an upgrade from XP? Or were you setting it up as dual
boot? If you were attempting an upgrade then your old XP installation has
probably been trashed and I would go for option 2 below otherwise try 1
first.

There are a few things you could try if all you need is to get access to
your data to back it up before a fresh install.

1) Perform a repair install of XP if you have the CD. Check it is the full
OS cd. Be careful I think Dell sometimes only supply a recovery CD and using
that will overwrite your hard drive.

2) If the above doesn't work then try a clean install of XP but don't format
the disk just specify a new folder for XP to install to.

3) There are adapters available that make it possible to connect a laptop
hard drive to a PC. If you can get hold of one of these they don't cost much
and a PC you can get your data off the drive.

Post back to the group if you need any assistance with the above.
