windows updates cause floppies to be unreadable

recently i have run across five computers that pop up a
dialog box that says "unable to format disk" when a
perfectly good floppy goes into the drive. at that point
there is nothing else that can be done, can't write to it,
can't read from it, can't copy from it, can't copy to it.
the only thing in common between the machines seems to be
existing XP OS, or older OS with recently completed
Windows Updates.

i have tried every combination i can think of looking for
a floppy that can be read, to no avail. new floppy, old
unused, old with existing data, written to by another
machine, etc.

i see there are about 7 messages here, prior to mine,
having similar problems.

does anyone have any idea?
