Windows Update

Charlie

I am suddenly unable to do a Windows Update on my XP
Pro Computer. I get a page that looks different from the
usual page and it does not search for installed updates.
It starts up and hangs and ultimately times out. I have
done updates before.
The web page address is:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.as
px?ln=en-us.
The usual page is
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp.
Also it occures to me that I have not been notified of
any updates lately like I have on my other computers.

No I am not running SP2. I have scanned with McAfee
Antispyware, virus scan, ad-aware and spybot. No problems.
I dont know where the V5 came from. ALl the other
computers are V4 updates

Update V5 has just become final, so I presume it has been put on the
Update site as an automatic update. On loading that page there should
first be an offering of 'checking installed software', followed by
offering Express or Custom Install.

It also needs you to have the Automatic Update *service* on Automatic
start and running (even if you turn autoupdate off) and the Background
Intelligent Transfer one available (on Manual start if not automatic),
but it will usually complain explictly if they are not

I don't think V5 has gone live just yet, Alex (unless it happened overnight
<eg>).
