Windows Update: "Thank you for your interest..." msg

Dave

I'm a Windows XP user. I just installed recommended updates through Windows
Update. The next time I restarted my computer, and ran Windows Update again,
I got a new window displaying this:

=============================

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the
most out of your computer.

The latest version of Windows Update is available on computers that are
running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium
Edition, Windows 2000 (except Windows 2000 Datacenter Server), Windows XP,
and the Windows Server 2003 family.

=============================

What's going on? Any help appreciated!

Hi

Try here:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Also, have a look in the Windows Update.log file - in the
%systemroot% folder. Look in there for any error numbers,
then refer to the above link.

I got that "Thank you for your interest" message too! I
ran the updates last week and everything was fine. Is
this message the result of one of those steps that
Microsoft took to fend off the DOS attacks?

Hi Susan

MS will provide updates when necessary - that could mean 1 every 2 weeks or 1 every 2 hours - depends on what 'nasties' are about.

I tried the updates again last night and it worked. But I
was surprised that there were two more critical updates to
install. I updated the computer just the end of last week.
How often if Microsoft coming out with updates?

Lately, MS has been averaging about a patch a week. Over the last year,
the average is about a patch every 10 or 11 days, or so. I'd get used
to developing a relationship WinUpdate and reading a group like this, so
that you can hear about any problems that can & have happened with MS
updates, before you install them.

There is no thing as Safe or "Trustworthy Computing." It's the virtual
wild west out there, and the only person or thing you can trust is
yourself. Don't rely on any one company, or technology to protect your
computing environment. You have to protect yourself, and if you have
broadband, your first line of defense should be between your computer
and the entry point of your broadband connection into your home. Your
second line of defense is keeping your AV update. And your third line
of defense, is using your own common sense. Staying away from high risk
activities, like file-sharing, porn sites, not opening up email
attachments from friends and family, unless you're expecting them in
advance, reading before you click on any pop-up, . . . . the list goes
on & on.
