Windows Update still won't work; help please

Windows Update makes it through the "Download progress" bar, then
immediately shuts down and gives me the message that nothing
installed. It never makes it to the "Installation progress" bar.

It has been doing this for two days now. I have tried system
restore going back one, two, three, and four days; I have tried
troubleshooting tips; I have tried everything I feel comfortable
monkeying with. But it still shuts down every single time at the
same place.

After approximately 50 attempts, I nearly have this error message
memorized:
------------------------------------------------------------
No Updates Were Installed

The following items failed to install. To try installing them
again, click Review and install updates, and then click Install
Now again.

August 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer 6 Service
Pack 1 (822925)
Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components (823718)
------------------------------------------------------------

Can anyone hypothesize a list of things that might cause update
to stop immediately after download every time?

(Also, I figured out that I should ignore the autoupdate popup
message, because accepting its offer to "install now" locks
things up, requiring a power-down reboot.)

Thanks for any help you can give.

There are checkboxes next to every item that it wants to download. Clear
all the checkboxes and click the Close button.

Thank you very much, Bill; that worked.

One last question: The autoupdate icon in the tray still asks me
if I want to install the updates (ie, it obviously doesn't know I
already did it myself). Any way to disable that popup message,
or reset something so it "knows" the update is already applied?

Thanks again.

scan has finished, which will take you to another page with details of the
patch along with a direct download link in most cases.

Thanks, everyone. Your advice worked, and I'm back in the saddle
again.
