windows update problem

Hi all.

I'm having a real problem with windows update not installing some updates I
select, not only that but if I turn on automatic updates the PC picks the
updates up ok but when it says shut down to install them they never get
installed. I know this cause the next time I go to shut down the PC it says
the exact same thing..

So I go to windows update and let it do it's scan thing and it picks up the
updates that my system needs, downloads and tries to install them and then
comes up with the message that the updates couldn't be installed (No error
message given) Any ideas at all??
Thanks

uhm... ignore his reference to KB 885523, unless you have T V Media. In any event, it really does not address your original problem.

Suggest you review the windows update log file and see what it contains for the last session.
Use Notepad or Wordpad and take a look at (usually C:\WINNT or \Windows )
%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

Scan down to the bottom. Review contents.
You need to look for entries marked "Error" such as 0x......... (where ....... are numbers)

See KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Also, just to get the Error from update history:
Go back to Windows Update, but then select View update history. (When you first get to website for Microsoft Update-Windows Update, look at left-hand column, under Options. Press "Review your update history".)
If this is on V6 of Windows Update, you should be able to click on that error note (the red X), and see some info.
