Windows update failure

I have got the little icon that tells me that updates are ready to be
installed. After the progress I get the following error message:

{BCFF9EA6-39FA-4D69-9EF9-1E03D2FAF5EB} 100 80070103 AutomaticUpdates Failure
Content Install Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the
following update with error 0x80070103: Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R)
Audio Controller.

The online Help hasn't got anything in its data base regarding this error
(got there via 'my computer', 'manage', 'event viewer', 'system' and then
double click the event and clicking the link)

Can I reset this update so it can download again or is there any other way?

I found the following suggestion in one of the latest postings:

1. Click on Start, and then click Run.
2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
3. Type "net stop wuauserv" without the quotes at the command prompt, and
press Enter.
4. Delete (or put in recycle bin) the contents of
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (but not the SoftwareDistribution folder)
5. Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
6. Now try Windows Update again.

In point 4 I proceeded a little different: I moved all the content into a
another folder.
After that I reset my automatic update to notify only. The icon popped up to
DOWNLOAD the driver again and I thankfully declined. When I checked on the
MS update site I found that the driver update is now hidden.
Hope it stays that way!!!!

PS. I am really not sure why this driver was in the critical updates list.
Previously driver updates like this were in the optional department

Thanks for posting back, this may assist someone else.
Why MS put the driver in the critical updates area was explained once, but I can't
remember where. Doesn't matter. In any event as you probably found out from the WU NG
it's better to check with the manufacturer's site first.
Have a good weekend.
