Windows Update - failed product validation

Hi,

I bought a new PC from an online auction site and when I ran windows
Update it said it failed the product validation so I am unable to
download updates. My question is, if I go and buy a copy of XP Home
now, do I need to reinstall XP or can I just somehow set it you use the
new license key of the newly purchased XP?

Thanks for any help

You can do a repair install with the new product key if the version on
the computer is the same as the new version. You cannot, for example,
repair an OEM version with a retail version.

That said, there is a workaround so you can get updates. Open
IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Manage Add Ons and disable Windows
Genuine Advantage. Close IE for it to take effect. Open IE and go to
Windows Update, ignore the icon in the lower right hand corner of IE and
download all the updates your little heart desires.

When buying a used system it's best to format the drive(s) an start a
new. You don't know what nasties are hiding there not to mention the
illegal copy of XP you had. Backup your data, buy a version of XP and
install it fresh, restore your data and reinstall program files.

Hi, there is a simple fix for this just follow the directions and
you'll have a merry xmas.......enjoy.

Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the
address bar and press enter:

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

It turns off the trigger for the key check.
