Windows Update error 0x8ddd0004

J

Jim

This is a new install on an HP laptop. I installed
the "critical updates" CD and then installed SP2. I then
attempted to do the normal Windows Update to insure that
I had all the latest updates. I have continually
received this error message and have performed the fixes
to no avail:

[Error number: 0x8DDD0004]
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot
display the requested page. Try refreshing the page,
clearing your Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files,
closing and restarting Internet Explorer, or trying
Windows Update again later.

Any suggestions?

Hi

Fyi, microsoft.public.windowsupdate is a better newsgroup for
Windows Update questions.

You could try the steps in this post to try to get WU to work:

http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

If nothing there worked, try the steps in this post:

If that didn't work either, check that WuWebControlClass is enabled in
Internet Explorer:

Thanks, guys, for your help so far. I have had this laptop for exactly 49
hours and my head is swimming with error 0x8ddd0004. I now have a case
number with Microsoft and am going to let them try to solve the problem - am
afraid to touch this thing otherwise.

I will keep their "work around" and/or "run around" posted to this
newsgroup, as it occurs or not occurs.

This problem has been resolved, but I am not sure why. Attempting to do
Windows Update again, I answered "yes" to the question "Do you wish to
install Microsoft Windows Publisher?". Not being able to find out what that
meant I always answered "no" before. After answering "yes" the Windows
Update performed as expected.
