Windows "Un-Easy" Transfer - Arrrgghhh!

Am hoping someone has some actual help besides a link to a subject having
nothing to do with this problem. After being told the best way to transfer a
"lot" of files from my PC with WinXP SP2 to my new Toshiba laptop with Vista
was via a transfer cable, I went to Wally World and bought the Belkin cable
for about $36. Am hoping it was not a lot of money wasted for nothing (I am
disabled and on a VERY limited budget, $36 is a lot to me).

I had problems with the included software with the cable, "Laplink PCSync"
recognizing my laptop folders and files, so i downloaded the Easy Transfer
for WIndows (BETA) and used it. Well, the window on my PC (after a period of
OVER 24 hours for 40 gigs of files) said it was done, and for me to now
"follow the directions on my new computer" (the laptop). Fine, however the
laptop shows it is STILL transferring files, even though I have since
rebooted the PC and been using it.

Should I just unhook the darn cable and click the X on the top of the Easy
Transfer Window? Just am not so ready after being computerless for this long
to find that NOTHING has transferred. Am about to pull out what hair is left
after dealing with this supposed "easy" method and just go to DVD's like I
wanted to.

Please help with this, if you know what is happening. Hope this is not a
first, but if it can help someone else, so be it.

PC System is Windows XP SP2, fully updated and maintained.

Laptop is brand new Toshiba, WIndows Vista, fully updated and maintained.
It's new after all! LOL

Excuse me, but the above link IS for Easy Transfer from XP SP2 to Vista.
Read it AND print it out!

And if you can not understand it, transfer your documents by burning to CD,
copying to Memory Stick, External Hard Drive, etc.

And manually redo your settings for Vista.

Am totally unsure as to why you responded with "Excuse me" along with the
emphasis on how the link you sent to me would contain the answer to my query,
but it was not helpful in any sense of the word when compared to what I was
asking for. Likewise, it seems as though your mindset was one of me being
some bimbo by referencing "if you cannot understand it ..." Perhaps I misread
your reply (along with my fiancé and friends misreading it), or maybe it's
just a case of "not smiling from your wrists down" while typing to others.

Granted, there's no way for you to have known I am not one of those folks
who will never "RTFM." -- On the contrary, more than likely I go too far in
reading all there is available before changing something on my system. As
such, I'd already read the info and related linked info on the URL you sent,
plus everything else I could find on the MS site and in the MS newsgroups
concerning this particular problem, and I'd found nothing. Still am in that
same position. Oh, and I have also read the files available on the software
included with the Belkin cable -- which is the PCMover program ->

software (which looks almost identical to this "Easy Transfer" from
Microsoft), there was no mention in their support about partial transfers
and/or transfers locking up.

Since writing my request for assistance, I did stop the transfer window from
it's endless loop on the laptop [or "new" end] and found the files had mostly
transferred. What had not been relayed however were any of the files and
folders from my original PC hard drive, and a partial group of files from the
Western Digital external hard drive. So am still unsure as to why none of the
folders from this main drive on my PC transferred. They were not programs,
just image and various text (txt, rtf, doc, html, etc.) files. I've looked
online at various tech sites to see if perhaps this might be related to there
being any type of system shut down, partial energy saver or whatever the
cause, but nothing was listed along those lines, or in relation to my actual
scenario. I'd shut down all programs, even disconnected the wireless and
cable, shut down the screen saver and shut off any hard disk or system
standbys, just in case. So, it must simply be something within the sharing of
information somehow.

Speaking of which, I know someone in the boards here had asked whether they
could transfer programs and were told they couldn't with the Windows transfer
program. In my reading about the PC Mover program, I found it will actually
move your programs, and they state "there is no need for you to find those
old CD's or serial numbers." Now that is great news! Perhaps next time I will
try the PC Mover and see if the same thing happens.

Still, if anyone here does know about this situation with partial transfers
as I'd described, please do feel free to respond. A kindly tone is always
much nicer than one of superiority. )
