Easy File Transfer

I used the Easy Transfer Cable recommended by Microsoft and Vista to transfer
files and settings and so forth from my XP pc to my new laptop. When I tried
to open all of my saved email messages, they were in hieroglyphics or some
strange type font. Can someone tell me what went wrong or how I can access my
files and so forth, or do I need to go back and hook the PC's up again and do
it differently this time?

If you are talking about one of those physical direct usb - usb cables, does
it do that when you drag & drop?
Mine images everything faithfully when I drag & drop.
