When looking at processes running in Windows Task Manager, trying to find
out what has slowed your system to a crawl, which column shows the most
likely culprit? It seems as though CPU should show whatever is eating
processor time, but I have been told MemUsage is the factor.

Under the CPU column, System Idle Process should be at the top at about
97/98 %. What is the biggest factor under MemUsage on your system?

sometimes the crawl is due to low ram. however, the task manager does tell
you what is loaded. some programs use cpu by constantly pinging or checking
something on your system or on the net. some spywares disguise themselves as
a valid process. while others may simply be a memory hog. if you are having
some trouble you could go into msconfig and deselect all the startups under
the startup tab. then you can initiate them one by one or let them initiate
by themselves when you "actually" run a program. keep in mind that after you
disable all your startups and reboot, check out your task manager and you may
see the culprit that is circumventing you.....

hogs the system the most? When MsMpEng.exe (Microsoft Defender) runs it
shows it is taking 98% of my CPU, and I can't do anything else until it is
done, or kill it. However our IT folks say that the CPU % is not the major
factor as to what is slowing down your system, it is memory usage.
