Windows SteadyState Problems

I decided to give Windows SteadyState a go on one of the public computers at
the library I work for. Initially, I'd installed it without reading much on
it, and decided to take it off. I had yet to activate drive protection. I had
a few minor post-uninstall problems that were remedied by deleting the user
account and creating another.

I tried it again some time after that which lead to more serious problems.
Now, even with the program off my drive, both the Windows Security Center and
Automatic Updates are acting bizarrely. Automatic Update won't come on at
all! Every option in the area in which Automatic Updates are turned on is
grayed out. The service, however, is started and set to come on automatically
according to services.msc. The Security Center service is disabled and
refuses to start on logging in without turning it on through Services.msc.

Anyone have a suggestion on how to solve this?

The behavior may be unrelated to having SteadyState
(http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=27570) installed. As it's a publicly
accessible machine, it may be a hijackware problem.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

I am fairly certain that it relates to SteadyState as it happened immediately
after the uninstall. The first time I uninstalled, then redid the user
account, it was fine. Things went screwy again after the second uninstall.

I tried reinstalling it today and changing some settings prior to
uninstalling it. Now, it's even more messed up.

Try posting to the SteadyState forum, Wes:

I wouldn't install SteadyState until I was absolutely certain the machine
was 100% free of any/all hijackware/Trojans.
