Auto updates error

My icon says that my auto updates have been disabled. When I go to change it
the security center has the auto updates checked that they are in fact
enabled. I go to the security website and it checks to see if I'm running the
proper stuff and then I get a message saying... error 0x8DD0018, The site
cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not
running:Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install
high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more
quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with
troubleshooting, if needed)
To make sure these services are running:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply.
8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click
Properties.
10. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
11. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.

I do all these things but it never kicks off of being disabled in the
services page. I sometimes get a error 1058 too, pertaining to this. Can
anyone assist me?

If neither of these KB articles resolve the issue then the system is
infected with malware. Most likely Vundo/Virtumonde/Zlob/SDbot or a
combination of them all.

You cannot manually start the Automatic Updates service and you receive
an "Error 1058" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP
or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

First off, run disk clean up and a thorough scan for malware and viruses
then read the Info listed on the links below.

Open a notepad and copy and paste the following into it and save as
update.bat on your desktop. Double click the bat file to excute and click
[Yes to register the dlls and reboot your machine and see if that will help!

There's a very strong possibility that you have a Vundo infection, which is
usually accompanied by ZLOB and/or SDBot infections, all of which are
protected by a rootkit.

Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
