Windows sounds/Events do not play

Hi,

Just recently, I noticed that my Windows startup/exit sounds and other
events do not play anymore.
I checked eveything on this newsgroup and could not find an answer relevant
to my case. The Windows sounds Wav files are OK when I manually click on
them, all other sounds are OK (MP3 etc;..). This is just the system event and
sopund association which do not play anymore. This happens on my 2 laptops
running WIndows XP Home: one with the French version the other one with the
US version.
The last thing I did on both machines was de-installing the "Ulead DVD
Picture Show Software". Re-installing this software does not help either.
This does not prevent me to use the PCs, but it is quiet annoying not to be
warned of any windows event.
Any suggestion to help me ??
