Windows shuts down after login

My daughter's XP home edition machine was working fine.
She ran a routine virus scan then shut it down (didn't
find any viruses). When she starts it up, right after
clicking the login user box, the background is briefly
displayed and then it shuts down. That's all it will do.
She tried going in as administrator - same thing.
Any ideas?
