windows security alert

had a message saying windows can not find antivirus software on my computer-
windows defender is off-
it is not giving me the option to turn it on.
I have Mccafee security sys which includes antivirus and it is up and running-
do not know what to do and how to turn the windows defender on / or shall I
uninstall it and try the most recent edition. thanks

Could you supply some information on what your OS is, firewall, other
RealTime Ptotection programs (Spybot S&D with the tea timer) (Counter Spy)
(Spy Sweeper), etc? Do you have Windows Live OneCare installed?

OS vista home premium/i have subscription for Mcafee till 7/08 which tells
me that antivirus/firwall/antispy are on.but windows security message can not
find antivirus on my computer-
the windows real time protection is on./
no I do not have windows live onecare installed .

Hi Sami,

use the belt-and-suspenders mode. Make a Restore Point.

As always, you should make sure that you have got a working system restore
point before you run any test, download or install a new game, application,
or software update, when you make changes to your computer.

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administrator.

You might try this.


Right-click Command Prompt (in Start Menu\Programs\Accessories) and choose
Run as Administrator. Type (or Copy and Paste) the following command:

winmgmt /verifyrepository

Press Enter. If the system returns "WMI repository is not consistent", type
this command:

winmgmt /salvagerepository

Press Enter. The first time you run this it will fail. (It will issue stop
commands to the services causing it to fail, saying, "A stop control has
been sent to a service that other running services are dependent on"). It
might take a couple minutes for the services to shut down.

Run the last command again. You may have to run it 3 times before it finally
runs and completes on its own.
