Windows Reactivation

I contacted a Microsoft Technician who told me my numbers were not valid.
Said I would have to call manafacturer to get a product key. Called
Hewlett-Packard (Compacq). I paid $59 to have the HP representative tell me
becasue my system was too old (purchased in 2001), he could not provide me
with a product key. Is there someone out there who from Microsoft or
elsewher, who can help me get my Windows XP Reactivated. This machine was
purchased from a well know retailer and has never left my house. Please !

You get to buy a new copy of Windows.

Ouch. Given your customer service experience with MS, have you considered
Linux? None of that activation crap to deal with, and HP was the primary
sponsor of Debian (http://debian.org/) for almost a decade.

If Microsoft won't let you activate your copy of Windows, you lose. You
must find another OS to install, be it a newly purchased copy of Windows
and it's respective key, a Linux distribution, FreeDOS...anything but the
copy of Windows and serial number you already have.

I believe I would cancel the credit card charge to HP for that little
load of BS. And then call back and work up the line to a supervisor.

Probably, if you take your hard drive to a friend's place, hook it up in
their machine and copy the files you want to keep off that drive first. If
you don't have access to another computer, you might try using Knoppix to
rescue your files (http://www.knoppix.net/). If neither option is viable,
then you're probably not going to be able to save your data.

IIRC, HP and Microsoft both have the same support policy: You pay for their
time, not for a solution, whether or not they can help you. Odds are bwyn
got what they paid for, but didn't realize it's a money trap going in...
