Windows Product Activation

Vince

Hello,

When attempting logon,I receive the following message:

Windows Product Activation

"This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft
before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows
now?

Yes No

After clicking yes, I am notified the Windows is already
activated, and I am brought back to the logon screen and
the process repeats. If Windows is already activated why
can't I logon.

Thanks in advance,
Vince

Hi Vince

Try the following from Start>Run:

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

same result?

I can not logon to the OS so I can not access the Start
menu.

Have you ever been activated, or did you wait over the 30 day grace
period?

You didn't, by chance, install Windows XP using
a Restore or Reinstallation CD that came with
someone else's computer, did you?

No this is a new Windows XP CD, I got about 10 new laptops
and used one of the CD's to install on another machine.

thanks

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.

Something has got very much at cross-purposes. Take No, and you should
be able to logon - but in Safe mode. I'd suggest that you change the
setting that results in the second stage thinking it is activated. Start
- Run - regedit.exe and at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT
\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents
Highlight that and in the right pane double click on OOBETimer and
carefully *change* just the first byte.

Then to make sure that the relevant library files are OK, Start - Run
and run the two lines
regsvr32 recwizc.dll
regsvr32 licdll.dll

You should then be able to use
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
and use the option to Activate by telephone (toll free number will be
given) - that involves reading out a long number, checking it back and
receiving and typing in another in exchange. A modest hassle of a few
minutes, but probably quicker and safer than trying to patch around
things
