Windows Product Activation error

I'm running XP Home Edition. Computer is about a 4 year old Dell. When I
try to log on it give me the following error "A problem is preventing windows
from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error Code:
0x80090006". It seems everything I have found online is about partitions,
etc. My wife was just checking her email and playing solitaire and the next
time she tried to log on, it keeps giving this error.

Any suggestions?

can be several things to check, but please start with the folowing;


When you start Windows XP and log on, your receive the subject error.
When you press OK, you are returned to the Log On to Windows dialog.

NOTE: If you perform a System Restore, the problem may persist.

This behavior will occur if you are missing the
%SystemRoot%\System32\secupd.dat file and / or the
%SystemRoot%\System32\oembios.dat file and / or the
%SystemRoot%\System32\oembios.bin file.

To resolve this problem:

1. Restart your computer and press F8 to start in Safe Mode.

2. Log on.

3. Right-click My Computer and press Manage.

4. Open the Event Viewer.

5. Check the System event log by using the View menu to Filter for an
Event source of Windows File Protection since the last time you
successfully logged on. You should be able to locate the files that
could not be found during logon, probably as Event ID 64005.

6. Using another Windows XP computer, preferably as the same service
pack and hotfix level, copy the missing files. If you don't have
another Windows XP computer, you may be able to Expand the missing
files from the Windows XP CD-ROM.

7. Restart your computer normally.

8. You may have to reapply the latest service pack and hotfixes,
perform a SFC /SCANNOW and also check for viruses and other malware.

Ok... I am following you. However, when I click on system tools, then event
viewer, then system and then click view and then filter for Event sourse =
windows file protection and category = all from 12/1/2006 until current, I
only get 2 information files, both dated 12/29/06. One says shell32.dll
could not be copied into DLL cach. The other says that this file
(shell32.dll) was restored to the original verion to maintain system
stability.

I don't think this is the problem. The computer was working as of this past
Monday and has been used all the time since December.

What next? And thanks for attempting to help me.

Hi guys,
Coincindentally I'm running WinXP MCE 2002 and I am seeing the same
problem on my Dell Dimension E510. I followed jack's recommendations and
got down to task#5. I checked the sytem event log for Windows File
Protection events, but I don't see any files that couldn't be found during
logon, or any event id 64005.
Do you guys have any other ideas?

when did your problem start? My computer was fine on March 11th and screwed
up on the 12th
