In regards to the button at the bottom that "Closes this program and opens
the image for editing" I would prefer this button to open a different photo
editing program. How do I change it ?

=====================================
How to open your choice of image editors when
clicking the Edit button on the Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer screen.

IMPORTANT: This message contains information
about modifying the registry. Before you modify the
registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that
you understand how to restore the registry if a problem
occurs. For information about how to back up, restore,
and edit the registry, click the following link to view the
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Information About Editing the Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=256986#Topic2

===========================================

OK...go to...Start / Run and type in..."regedit" without
the quotes. Then click...OK...or press...Enter.

In the Registry Editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

In the Data column you should see:

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

(where you see *mspaint* in the example....you will
see your current default)

Replace the key with the path to the program that will
be your default image editor. I wanted Picture It! 7 so
the following is what I changed to.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 7\pip.exe" "%1"

Now, my images still open in the Picture and Fax viewer
but if I left click the Edit button...Picture It! 7 opens.

To replace the string...

Left click "default" to select it.

Go to...Edit / Modify...

In the "Edit String" field...

Copy/Paste the path to your program choice:

"C:\Program Files\??????????\???.exe" "%1"

Left click...OK.

Now, your images still open in the Picture and Fax
Viewer but if you left click the Edit button...your image
editing program opens..

Good luck.

==================================
I hope you read the MS Knowledge Base
article before you attempted to edit your
registry.

Possibly you entered the path to the new
program choice incorrectly. If you navigate
to the program folder of the editing program
you wish to set as the default editor and right
click the executable *?????.exe*....you can
check properties for the correct path. On the
General tab you will see "Location".

For example...lets say you wanted to change
the default to Digital Image Pro 10....you
would navigate to the Microsoft Digital Image
10 folder / Right click *pi.exe* / choose Properties /
on the general tab the location is:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Digital Image 10

So here's what the exact registry entry would be:
(the quotes and spaces must be included)

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Digital Image 10\pi.exe" "%1"

I have tried the steps several times and it won't change to the program I
want. It always stays as Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Do I need to
restart my computer or something ??

====================================
What happens when you enter the new path? Does
it revert back to the original?

You could try a restart but I don't think that's the problem.

ANOTHER VERSION:
(This value should be the same as the previous one)

Run regedit Change the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\
command to be the photoeditor you prefer. For example, I changed mine from
"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1" to "C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd\Photoed.exe" "%1" close regedit.

It does not revert back. Even when I go back into both of those registry keys
it says the program I want but it still won't open when clicking that button
within picture and fax viewer. Thanks for your help anyway

What program opens when you click the Edit
button? What program are you trying to set as
the default editor?

Is it possible that a character or space was
overlooked in the key? Copy / paste the exact
key that you entered in your next message.

Right now "Microsoft Office Picture Manager" opens when I click the edit
button which is strange because those registry keys don't indicate that
program. They say what I have changed them to (Microsoft Picture it! 9) but
still that program doesn't open

Copy / paste the key you entered in your next
message so I can see it.

If your program is installed on drive C:...the
entry should look exactly like the following:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 9\pip.exe" "%1"

If something is over-riding this entry, I have
no idea what it is.

Here it is...cut & pasted right from the registry key itself

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 9\pip.exe" "%1"

Your entry is perfect...

Here's one more idea...

Open Microsoft Office Picture Manager...
Go to...Tools / File Types...
Uncheck all the boxes...OK....

Close Microsoft Office Picture Manager...

Try the Edit button again.

Just wondering...are you trying to drive me crazy?

I'm joking...

OK, I guess you are saying that Picture It! 9 opens
now when you click the Edit button in the Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer?

What picture appears? No picture? An incorrect picture?

Ok...you open a .jpg in Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer...left click the Edit button...Picture
It! 9 opens but *no* image is on the PI9 screen?

Can you open the same image in PI9 if you
go to...File / Open...and select it from your
browser?
