Windows NT Missing?

T

TLWilliams904

I Belive I was Hit with a Very bad Virus
Im using windows xp pro with service pack 2
I believe windows NT is important! am I right?
i was online and without any options to select an update ran/ then restarted
my computer again w/ no options to restart now or later
when system rebooted My antivirus was still running but my firewall had been
completely disabled when clicking windows firewall, i recieve an error Msg
sttding unable to start then prompted me for an option to enable the Internet
connection sharing/ windows firewall service, next error recieved was unable
to start ics service
I tried system restore: that didn't work
I then tried to manually turn ics on: that didnt work
I read some information on a newsgroup here with same error msgs ... so
attempted there suggestion of Virus scan full system after deleting temp
files then do winsock reset: firewall came up for a sec then disabled again /
and will not turn on
i read some more information on the microsft sight about a particular error
i recieved when I manually tried to turn on ics/ error 2001 specified driver
invalid
and it said windows NT missing
so I checked sure enough I have No NT files

What can be done about this?
If how can Window NT back especially if i dont have a cd for that?
My next step is to do a clean install of xp , Is this My best Option?
considering all the problems

Your problems were caused by running your anti-virus while you installed the
updates. Turn off the anti-virus, and try the updates again.

No, not really. It's a totally separate and much older operating system.

i was online and without any options to select an update ran/ then restarted

What kind of update? From where did you obtain it?

when system rebooted My antivirus was still running but my firewall had been

sttding unable to start then prompted me for an option to enable the Internet

Then whatever driver you're trying to install isn't the correct version
for WinXP.

so I checked sure enough I have No NT files

Well, no, you shouldn't have.

What can be done about this?

Until you give us more information about the "update" you installed,
it's not possible to say. We could only make guesses.

If how can Window NT back especially if i dont have a cd for that?

You can't, nor do you need to do so.
My next step is to do a clean install of xp , Is this My best Option?
considering all the problems

It may well be, if you can't provide more specific information about
exactly what you installed.

You know, I've never, ever seen that cause a problem. Not with Win98,
not with Win2K, and not with WinXP. Which specific new update is
incompatible with which specific anti-virus application?

The thing is I dont know what the update is or where it came from/ it did not
allow me anytime to read the msg box /all I caught was update installing now
then the msg box cleared and a download window appeared showing the process
status but there was no option to cancel. it only took a min to complete
then the screen blinked a msg box popped up windows restarting, then it shut
down and rebooted

What web site were you visiting or what speciufic application were you
running when this occurred? Did the various dialog boxes not include
any information in their respective title bars?

What anti-virus application and firewall do you have running that let
this happen without any input from you?

I'm sorry, but without specific information about the nature and source
of the "update," or a clearer description of the precise problems now
being experienced, there's very little we can offer in the way of
specific advice. In this circumstance, a clean re-installation of your
OS and applications (after backing up any data you wish to preserve, of
course) may well be the safest course, as much as I dislike recommending
such a drastic course of action.

The only thing that was running on my computer was Internet explore
Using windows firewall which was turned on.
There is a security suite from my isp called clear wire suite
and also AVG 7.5 was on.
I have never had any problems with the windows updates and my anti-virus
being on at the same time. The Web-site was Ebay.com. I have never had any
problems being on that site before. When the dialog box advising an update is
installing came up again I had no time to read it, to my knowledge I can not
tell you what the Title was. When I ran the AVG virus scan and spyware scan
it reported back
Found :Zebot and Im not sure of the name but it was a Rat (I believe it
started with a B)
The exact problem that I am having is that:
I cannot connect to the internet : unable to display site then a network
connection lost (reconnect or work offline) box comes up which never did this
before
Windows Firewall will not turn on
I get the security balloon advising No firewall detected so I got to control
panel click Windows firewall then I recieve an error msg: (Unable to start
windows firewall/ internet connection service/ windows firewall services is
not running. Do you want to turn on internet connection service / windows
services?) when i click yes the next dialog box reads (Initializing
ICS/windows firewall service). The next dialog is an error msg ( Unable to
start ICS/Windows firewall services )
When i go to services I see the service and try to start it manually there
again i recieve th unable to start msg
I also see the TCP/IP services and that says it is stopped
The IPSEC service says that it is Stopped
If Im not mistaken I Think These should be on. Is that correct?
When I try to start them
I recieve Unable to start service Error 2001 Specified driver is invalid

It is not wise to run more than one software firewall at a time, or
more than one anti-virus application at a time. Doing so can easily
cause conflicts that negate any protection offered by either. It is
also not generally advisable to rely too heavily upon an ISP's security
suite; it's better to use something installed on your own computer,
under your own control.

I have never had any problems with the windows updates and my anti-virus
being on at the same time.

No, neither have I.
The Web-site was Ebay.com. I have never had any
problems being on that site before.

Unfortunately, eBay accepts advertising, and also does a poor job of
pre-screening items posted for sale (or there wouldn't be nearly so much
illegitimate software being offered as there is). It may well be that
one of the advertisements, or one of the sales offerings' files
contained malware.

When the dialog box advising an update is

?????? However, if one anti-virus application finds malware, there may
be more. Also, because many of the newer viruses and worms can disable
antivirus applications whose definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try
using one or more of the free on-line scanners to double-check the system.

Then how are you posting this? You're clearly accessing an Internet
web site to do so. Different computer?

: unable to display site then a network
connection lost (reconnect or work offline) box comes up which never did this
before
Windows Firewall will not turn on
I get the security balloon advising No firewall detected so I got to control

Try removing and reinstalling your network adapter's drivers, and
repairing the TCP/IP stack.

How to Reset Internet Protocol (TCP-IP) in Win XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q299357

If that fails, try using System Restore to return the system to its
state from the day before the incident. If that fails, it may well be
time to bite the bullet and perform a clean installation of the OS.

Im not at home I am at work that is how i have access to the internet. I
reserch and try to find any possible solution because the steps i did take
did not help.

i have done system restore: it did not work
I downloaded and ran adware2007 yesterday: saved to a flash drive took it
home and I ran it.
Tried to run the AV in safe mode but it would not work.
I'm not sure about the TCP/IP internet protocol reset. I read the article
the other day but was sure about it. I did however found a related article
in a news group that suggested to :
Netsh Winsock reset, when i rebooted firewall was on but only for a few
seconds then it went away again and will not come back on. I will try the
Internet protocol reset using the guided help after reading more on it or am
i doing the same thing as the winsock reset? If that doesn't work Im going
for the Clean install.

I must say bruce i really do thank you for your assistance and taking the
time to respond to me. It helped alot
