I am running Windows XP Professional and the Windows Messenger icon is
displayed in the systray. I do not use Windows Messanger and would like to
disable it. I do not want it in my systray. How do I disable, remove, or
otherwise get rid of it.

Open it and click on tools select options. Go to preferences tab and in
general uncheck the first two boxes. This may be enough to give you
peace.

You may uninstall it completely in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs >
Add/Remove Windows Components. Uncheck the Windows Messenger box.

SP2 has this option built-in
|I like this one from
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger_remove.htm
| better:
|
| If you prefer to remove Windows Messenger manually, click
Start, Run and
| enter the following command:
| RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
|
| Just copy and paste the line above instead of entering it
manually.

Modify the file C:\Windows\Inf\Sysoc.inf to remove the word "Hide"
from the pertinent Windows Components entries. Be sure to leave the
two surrounding commas in place. (Iow, change the line
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7" to read
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7") Save and exit Notepad.

Then click Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > windows
Components. You'll now be able to see Messenger listed.
