Windows Messenger Service (I want to turn it off)

Matt

I found out how to disable the Windows Messenger Service,
but now when I try to go into Control Panel >
Administrative Tools > Services, I get an error message
reading as follows:

' Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or
file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to
access the item. '

And I am indeed logged on as the Computer Administrator.
What gives?

How is it that you disabled Messenger Service ?
If you only did this the normal way, by changing the
startup setting in its properties within the Services
applet, then the message you are getting likely is the
result of some other issue.

You are right that Windows Messenger is not the Messenger Service.
But what did the poster mean by Windows Messenger Service ?
Either the uninstall of WM you outline, or the normal disabling of
messenger service should not have caused what the poster was
reporting however.
