windows media player

on the privacy tab in windows media player the boxes ( display media
information from the internet ) and ( up date media files from the internet )
are grayed out. also on the libray tab ( automatic media information updates
for files ) those boxes are grayed out as well . a box comes on saying i must
chang my privacy settings in tools and options. but i have tried everything i
can think of to change but it is no help. i installed safe xp a while ago but
i have taken every tick out of all the boxes but that has made no difference
i cannot even find safe xp to uninstall it.
help please.

You can try a System Restore first, if it hasn't been long since you used
Safe-XP.

This is what the FAQ page says about GameXP, SafeXP's sister program:
"I installed GameXP and just wanted to know if it has a uninstall program or
is there any way to remove it completely?"
- "There is no any install, so any uninstall option ise (sic) irrelevant."

It's an executable that makes the changes you checked, one way.

In the Registry, under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Media Player\Preferences ,
are the Media Player settings.

Disable these two Policy settings:

Note that it can be a per-user or a per-machine setting.

Equivalent registry values:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsMediaPlayer
Value: PreventMusicFileMetadataRetrieval [REG_DWORD]
Value: PreventCDDVDMetadataRetrieval [REG_DWORD]

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsMediaPlayer
Value: PreventMusicFileMetadataRetrieval [REG_DWORD]
Value: PreventCDDVDMetadataRetrieval [REG_DWORD]

Delete the two values in the above registry locations.
