Windows Media Player v11 beta

I'm sorry, I skipped all the banter to find a resolution... yet I
didn't find one.

Here's what I did:

Uninstalled IE 7 beta 2, and it worked. To do this, go to Add/Remove
Programs, click on the "Show Updates" checkbox, and unistall IE 7.
Restart your PC and it should automatically revert back to IE 6

Hope this helps the OP.

Um... perhaps alternatively you could do this, suggested by Microsoft:

Q. Why doesn't the Media Guide work?
A.

First, check that you have an Internet connection. If you have an
Internet connection but the Player is not detecting the connection, see
How do I stop Windows Media Player from acting as if I'm always
offline? If the problem continues, active scripting may not be enabled
in Internet Explorer. You can enable active scripting in the Internet
Options dialog box by clicking the Security tab, clicking Custom Level,
and then, in the Scripting section, enabling active scripting. We
recommend that you view the Windows Media Player 11 or Windows Media
Player 10 security statement before adjusting security settings.

What worked for me is to allow IE 7 to be your default browser (instead
of Firefox). This allowed me to keep WMP11 and IE7, though no firefox
as default :(
