Windows Mail vs. Outlook

I've been getting by with Windows Mail for a while, but miss Outlook from
when I last had it. Windows Mail just seems so slow and klugy by
comparison--and the Calendar is also usable, but annoying. What do you all
think? Outlook worth the investment for someone who is a heavy user with
their own business?

If you are familiar with Outlook, by all means use it, especially so for
a business. Outlook 2003 and later is fully compatible with Vista.

Yeah, I agree--I'm going to go for it. There are actually some pretty good
deals on it on Amazon. Do you think my data from Windows Mail will transfer
over at all? Not critical--I can always run both for a while until I don't
need the old data--but what do you think?

In a word, yes. Office Outlook would be VERY worthy of the investment in a
business scenario. Outlook was designed for the business environment,
Windows Mail is a minimal client designed for the home user.

Your email and contacts (and account info, for that matter) should transfer
fine. Outlook will offer to import the account settings when installed, use
Windows Mail's export feature to transfer the email, then use Outlook's
import function to transfer Contacts (Windows Mail does a better job
transferring email while Outlook works better transferring contacts between
the two). Note that you must have Outlook installed and setup before
attempting any transfers or you'll get an error message about a missing MAPI
service - that's a round-about way of saying that Outlook isn't installed
and it must be; it provides access to the Personal Folders (.PST) file where
your data will all go.

Outlook is often recommended for people who need an email program for
business use. Versions 2003 and later run well under Vista; versions 2000
and 2002 will run under Vista, but with problems.

Some, but not all, versions of Microsoft Office include Outlook.

Whilst Outlook is my mail program of preference, there are other options
available. Try downloading and installing the latest version of Mozilla
Thunderbird http://www.mozilla.com, Personally have not used it but many of
my customers would never leave it. It also has superior language support to
Windows mail.

If you need the features Microsoft put into Outlook, but decided not to put
into their no-extra-cost email programs, then it's likely to be a good
investment.

I haven't seen Outlook available separately, but some (not all) of the
versions
of Microsoft Office include it:
