Windows Mail is slow to compose/reply/forward

Recently upgraded to Vista Ultimate from XP Pro. OE migrated just fine and
everything seems to be working well except that when I click to create a new
mail, reply or forward. What happens is the hard drive activity goes crazy
for about 10-15 seconds and then the window where I can start typing in my
message appears. This same thing happens if you click on the Compose tab
under Tools|Options.

Anyone have an idea what is going on? Not sure why all the disk activity
just to compose an email. The only thing I can think of is that it is
loading a list of fonts.

I have noticed the same, I have no conclusive answer.
I have been using Vista since Beta2 and did not see
this until Vista RTM (Release version).

Do me a favor, reply to this post. Try and select about
5 lines to copy. Let me know if there's a few seconds of
hesitation.

When I use Reply Group there is no disk activity before the edit window
appears. When I use Reply there is 10-15 sec of disk activity before the
edit window appears. Seems to only happen when doing email.

I am using Avast antivirus and the icon in the Systray is set to animate
when performing any kind of virus scanning, email or otherwise. When all
this disk activity is happening that icon is NOT animating so I am assuming
that it is NOT antivirus that is causing this.

Also, why would antivirus have an effect on the Compose tab in the Option
dialog?

I have turned off Internet Mail scanning is Avast now. We'll see if it
makes a difference.

Okay... even with Email scanning turned off, the 10-15 secs of disk
activity still happens when creating/replying/forwarding an email. Just to
clarify, this is a delay that happens before the window appears that you can
begin typing in your message and not after clicking the Send button. SO,
when I click the Reply button there is 10-15 secs of disk activity then the
edit window appears. When I click Send the windows closes normally and the
mail sends immediately with no discernable delay.

It may be trying to figure out who is the default mail program. Try going
to Control Panel | Default Programs and make WinMail default. Then see if
its still an issue.

I have the same problem and have tried above fixes to no avail. I
wonder if it could be specific to Dell hardware since Walt Mossberg
noted the same problem, in his Wall Street Journal review of Vista, as
showing up only on one of the machines he tested, the Dell. I just got
a Dell XPS.

Disable startup programs and see what happens. Start | search and type
msconfig.

Nope. Checked that already. WinMail is the default and has all default
file associations.

Disabling startup programs had no effect.

Also tried "compacting" (or whatever it's called now) to no effect.

I have the same issue for composing / replying / forwarding mail using
windows mail. Please advise for any other solution. I have tried Steve's
advise with no luck.

It helps if you specify exactly what you tried, not "Steve's advice" or
"Joe's advice" since that is not referenced here and no one knows what you
mean, including me.

I have finally found the solution.
At first, I deleted all my messages (previously imported from oe), however
it was not the answer.
Later on, I deleted all my contacts (also imported from oe). Seems the
problem was solved with this method. I can compose / reply / forward email at
no time.

It seems there is some error during the contacts import process, or might be
the windows mail cannot cope with my '1650' contacts list.

have found it makes a difference in importing address book (wab) versus importing a CSV file.

Thank you for your idea but if I do delete all my contacts, how will I get
them all back or do I have to delete and start over?

You can save under *.CSV before you delete all your contacts.

If the "slow" problem disappear, then you know that your "contacts" causes
the problem. you can gradually build up your contacts again.

mikeyhsd said that there is a difference between importing *.wab versus
*.CSV file.
You can try to import CSV file thereafter.

How do we escalate this to microsoft to get this fixed.

I just spent an hour at a client today, and had the same issue, before I saw
this discussion. After deleting his 7000 contacts that were imported from OE
on his old XP computer, the delay in bringing up the composing message window
dissapears.

My guess is somehow whiel brinign up the compose message windows it starts
indexing the contacts.

People are getting upset about this as they cannot import their contacts....
