Windows Mail freezes on me periodically, when I click on a new message in my
inbox,it shows an old message and going from inbox folder to saved or junk
folder it freezes again. I'm not having any problems recieving or sending
mail. It's just freezing all the time?

You uninstalled your antivirus program, and Windows Mail was
still freezing up?

No, I didn't uninstall my anti-virus completely......I just shut off the
email scanning part of it. I have to uninstall it completely? Then
.........what do I use for anti-virus? Or are any of them compatible with
Windows Mail? Given the choice, I would do without using Windows Mail instead
of my antivirus program but I thought since it's part of Windows Vista it
would be compatible? Thanks for your patience!

There is no such thing as an antivirus program that is "part of Windows Vista."

If you are using either McAfee or Norton Antivirus, they are known to be
very hostile to Windows Mail. Uninstall the antivirus program, reboot
and try Windows Mail again. Once you get your email working properly,
download and install a less troublesome antivirus program such as the
free Avast. Whichever antivirus program you keep, be sure to
disable its email scanning option.

I wasn't talking about a anti-virus program being part of Windows Vista, I
was talking about Windows MAIL being part of Vista. I had no idea that McAfee
or Norton were not compatible with it as McAfee is the very anti-virus
program that was pre-installed on my new computer. Why would they install a
program that is not compatible? One more question: is there any way to
un-install Windows Mail?
Thanks again!

Windows Mail is compatible with Windows Vista. It just isn't
compatible with several antivirus programs. Computer sellers
install trial versions of these antivirus programs because they
are paid by the antivirus company to do so, in the hopes that
you will buy the program when the free trial period ends.

It is not possible to uninstall Windows Mail since it is an
integral part of the operating system.

It is not possible to uninstall Windows Mail? Well, crud.........can it be
disabled if you're not using it? That stinks.
By the way, it's still freezing up and slow and showing the wrong messages
when I click on them......no matter what I do.
And McAfee and Norton have been around for years!!! Why wouldn't Vista's
Mail program be made compatible?

Microsoft did not write the program around Symantec and McAfee's software.
They wrote their software around Vista and it doesn't work correctly. Sure
they've been around for years, but they've also screwed up Outlook Express
for years and now they are continuing the tradition.

You want to disable Windows Mail? Install NIS or McAfee or both.

Wow.......hostile? Okay.
So is that the reason hardly any of the software I use now works with Vista?
Because Microsoft wrote a program that doesn't work with anything? Okay, but
if Microsoft Mail is supposed to work with Vista.........why am I still
having freezing problems and slow problems when I did uninstall my anti-virus
program? What else could be causing a problem?
Thanks for all the HELPFUL responses!!!

Chances are, your antivirus program had already done its damage
by the time you uninstalled it. If you don't want to bother with trying
to repair the damage, just wait for Windows Live Mail to be released
later this month. Let's hope it will be more robust.

My hostility is not directed towards you but towards the software vendors
that sell their crappy products and don't bother testing them first.

After getting rid of the AV software, did you remove your mail account and
then add it back again to fix the issues generated by the AV stuff? (see
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 at the end)

If so, you could try wiping out the database and starting fresh. You can
just move all the contents to another directory and it will have an empty
message store then. Then use File | Import | Messages to get them from the
older store.

There are performance issues with WinMail that are not related to AV or
other software. It has its own problems.

Gottcha.....frustration overwelms me sometimes too. I do very much appreciate
your help!! and no, I didn't remove the mail account but that's next on the
list to try. I've tried a couple other things listed here (removing an
update, opening Windows Calendar, ect) so I'm trying a few things!!!
Thanks again for your patience.

The AV software modifies the account settings and it won't work correctly
unless you remove the account and then close and reopen WinMail and set it
up again. That's what it says on the website also.

I TOO am having the same problem with Windows Mail freezing up...this
happens WITH or WITHOUT a virus scanner running!
btw, i am running Kaspersky internet security v7.0.0.0.125
windows mail freeses up after every action i take..fo instance if i tryo to
look into my drafts folder it freezes for 5-10 seconds, the same thing
happens if i switch to the deleted or junk folders...or ANY other action i
might make.
i do NOT beleive it is the virus scaner as this issue has existed since
testing Vista which btw i was part of the vista beta team.

do you or anyone else have any other suggestions?
otherwise i will continue to use Thunderbird which i feel is far more
superior then win mail with te exception of it not having 64 bit support
