"windows mail could not be started"--from start window

This morning, Windows mail started throwing up these errors when trying to
start it from the "start menu" through both the top section and the "all
programs" menu. However, when I click the shortcut on the desktop, it works
fine.

Here's the error:
1) Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the
Windows Mail message store. Your windows Mail mailbox data is currently being
used by another program, such as a virus scanner. Clos the program or wait
for it to complete its operation, then open Windows Mail again. (0x800C0155)

2)Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized.

Does anyone have a fix for this? (the virus scan is not running and it
happens even with out any other application running.)

What is your antivirus program? Make sure it is not set to scan email.
Also do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and look and see if WinMail.exe is a running process.
If it is then endtask it and see if WinMail will start then.

I was working perfectly this morning and then these messages appeared:

"Windows mail could not be started. Initialize junk filtering. Your computer
may be out of memory or your disk is full(Ox8004005)"

Wehn i click ok, appears this message:

"Windows mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized"

I have:
1.- Turned off my mail scanners. I use Norton Antivirus.
2.- Ctrl+Alt+del
3.- Restarted my pc
4.- checked my memory. I have a lot of space in my PC, is new.

What other solutions can you give me to solve it?

I need help!!!

Apparently it fixed itself this weekend or the registry cleaner repaired it
in the mean time.
Thx guys!

Go to Start | Search and type msconfig and then disable all startup items
and non-MS services and then reboot. Then see if Winmail is functioning
okay. If so, then you can selectively enable the startup items to figure
what the problem program is.

In addition to the advice Steve gave you, do the following:

Uninstall your Avast, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install,
which then allows you to unselect installing its troublesome
email scanning module.

While Avast is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to
verify that the culprit has been found.

I have uninstalled avast, shut down, tried windows mail, still the same
error, then reinstalled with custome option "internet mail" deselected, tried
windows mail again and I get the same error message.... "Windows mail could
not be started. initialize junk filtering. Your computer may be out of
memory or your disk is full (0X80070002). I have plenty of memory! This is
ridiculous. I have problem after problem with Vista. Not being able to
retrieve my email is an inexcusable issue to force upon paying customers.
I've read some of your suggestions to convert to live mail - yet another
cumbersome action in a long stream of actions required by the customer. I do
not want to convert to live mail. I want windows mail. Is there a solution?

I have windows mail in my program files. I don't have windows live in my
program files. I don't want windows live. When I purchased Vista over 1
year ago, it took me over 2 weeks to find a solution to get windows mail to
be my default program - (something to do with registry keys), and I'm not
going to go through that again with another email program.

We can help you with the default program issue, that's an easy one.
Why not give Windows Live Mail a try? It's not like you have to marry it,
till death do you part. If it turns out you don't like it, merely uninstall.

I've scanned through the various discussion threads on this topic, and while
I appreciate your expertise, I don't trust a suggestion to switch emails. It
may only take you a few seconds to do what you are suggesting, but it takes
me much longer. I don't fix computer problems for a living, nor as a hobby.
I want Windows Mail... I'm familiar with it, and I don't want to go on
another learning curve. I could, until today, just click on it and it opens.
My most recent email store was within the month. My experience 1 year ago
to get my email to default to windows mail (vs outlook express) was not
simple and it was almost 2 weeks before it was working; I used the discussion
group to fix the issue, and had to try a few different solutions before the
right one was found. I have important emails I need to respond to (I don't
think I'm unique in having important emails). I have email addressess stored
in there that I don't want to lose, and it took some time to create my
address book. I can't access now, and I'm afraid I've lost all my
addresses. When I purchased Vista, I had no idea it would be so difficult to
use. Is it really expected that the customer is supposed to know how to
navigate through all these glitches?
- a very frustrated PC customer, who is starting to understand what her
friends mean when they advise her to switch to MAC.

Percentage wise, very few people have problems of the type you
experienced. For most of us, it just works. That's not to minimize the
troubles you've had; be aware that you just happened to get unlucky.

Development on Windows Mail was stopped in mid-summer 2006.
Many of us who beta-tested it would say, it was released before it was
ready. So, it has some obscure bugs that may affect a few unlucky people.
Once Windows Mail becomes corrupted, as yours apparently has, there
is no easy solution. You could restore Vista to an earlier date, or you
could reinstall Vista, or you could attempt a rather laborious reset of
Windows Mail:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html
Scroll down to the section "PROBLEM TWO: How to Backup and Reset
Windows Mail ".

Any of those three solutions would be way more work than switching to
Windows Live Mail.

Thanks; however, I don't see how installing a new email program will get me
my emails and contact list back, especially if it sounds like my Windows
email account is corrupted. Dissappointing to hear it may be corrupted,
especially because I'm one of those overly cautious people who deletes
without reading any emails with attachments, even those from friends.
Further the only additional programs I have are Real player, Adobe (those 2
are the free downloads to enable me to view files in those formats), WinTV,
Microsoft Office, Avast, printer software, and back-up software.

Windows Live Mail automatically imports all your accounts, settings, rules,
contacts, folders, and emails from WM. Since it rebuilds the message
store from the individual messages, it is often able to overcome a
corrupted WM message store.
