Windows Mail contacts...unable to edit!

I cannot edit my Windows Mail contacts in Vista.

When I double click a contact, a window briefly flashes and goes
away...can't even read what it says. When I click on File/Import/Windows
Contacts... I get an "OK" box with a red "X" in it...no message text
indicating what the problem is.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Brian,

Have you resolved this issue. I'm trying to modify "windows contacts" on a
new laptop with Vista Home Premium and it does the same thing. I can't add,
change, import, or export.

Thanks!

I also can not add, change, import or export. When I open my contacts
window, the window does not have the tool bar for "add contact" "new contact
group" etc. When I go to help on contacts the window that is given on the
help window has that tool bar with those buttons. The only way that I can
add the contacts is to create a new message and put the address in as a
recipient.... very time consuming.

Help!!!

When you open Contacts, there should be buttons for New Contact, New Contact
Group, Import and Export.

If you don't have these, Vista has probably changed the folder template.

Right-click on a blank area of the right pane, and select "Customize this
folder"
in the pull-down box, select "Contacts"
ok

hate to state the obvious, but.......
dave wrote "vista has probably changed the folder template"

key word here being "probably". dave. wtf. do you even have vista? if you
did i think you might understand the big "opps" MS made.

windows mail is busted. it sucks i know.............

good night, and good luck.

Yes, Gomer, I have Vista. Been using it since 2/2/07.

I say "probably" because I can't see the poster's computer to see exactly
what it's doing.
And I think you meant "oops" instead of "opps".

However, I don't think it's WM that's changing the folder template. Vista
seems to do that to most folders, eventually.

have continued to try and cure problem - but no success - has any tried
the reg-cure-it reckons I have 840 errorrson my computer but although
download to lacate problems is free you have to purchase the part that
cures - am desperate enough to try - but not sure if this would be aswer
- any one else tried it

Watch out - registry cleaners often cause more problems than they
cure. I haven't tried that one, though.

Agreed as a general rule of thumb any sort of registry shenanigans would
be a bad idea. Especially if you dont know that this is the problem.

One other suggestion I have noted (but not tested) is that certain
Antivius packages (such as Norton) can cause this problem and that
deinstallation and replacement with a different package (there are a few
free ones that are good like AVast and Antivir) seems to resolve the
issue.

Certainly one to try before dissembling the Registry..

Good luck
I've heard that for avast! and AVG, it's a good idea to use a custom install
that tells it to leave out the part that scans email. I haven't heard
whether
Antivir needs this too.

have uninstalled McAffee and reinstalled compatable anti virus -
disabling e-mail scanning, do not have KB933928, have set all defaults,
uninstalled microsoft outlook any other ideas PLEASE!!!!! Is it worth
the effort if and when I get it up and running?

Which compatible antivirus? If it's avast!, AVG, or certain others, and
you used the default install, you may need to uninstall it and then install
it again with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that
scans
email. With some others, just disabling the email scanning part is enough.

Where or how do you get a custom download - everywhere I try it seems to
be automatic with no choices thank you in anticipation!!!!!!

A custom download of what? We aren't good at reading your mind,
and those of us who use Windows Mail don't have a good way to
go back to any previous messages.

SORRY - blame it on frustration - I have a prolem with opening my
contacts and I was recomended to uninstall my McAffee and try avast but
seemingly disabling e-mail scanning not enugh I have to download a
custom version and totally omiting e-mail scanning I cannot find how to
do this - any ideas???????

You don't download a custom version. You download the regular
version and choose custom installation when the install procedure
starts up.

I have had the same problem with a new PC and Vista "pre-installed".
Loaded Office 2000 and Outlook and bingo, Windows Contacts ran a muck.

It's unfortunate with each iteration of OS from Windows 3.1 to date I see
less "user friendly auto-installs" and more need to hack into the
installations manually.

Anyone from Microsoft able to provide insight into "backwards compatibility"
and Office 2000 (Outlook) regarding the mystery of the "flashing Contacts
Box"?

Thanks,

Office XP (2002) and earlier are not supported in Vista.

I have xp outlook loaded and I still have problems with flashing
contacts

Is that the version of Outlook also known as Outlook 2002? If so, it
has a few problems when run under Vista.

I have the same problem and it started after a Windows update. I did a
system restore back to the update point and the contacts started working
again. Then, after the next windows update was performed, I have the same
exact problem again. Something in the updates seems to be causing the
problem. This is frustrating!

Since you restored to before the update was applied, it was probably
applied again during the next Windows update.

This is often a symptom of having a non-compatible third party
security program, like SpywareBlaster.

Outlook 2000 can also cause problems with Vista's contacts.

THIS SOLUTION WORKS:

I had the same problem. Solution 1 is that if you get a new VISTA computer,
DO NOT try to use Outlook 2000. The new WINDOWS MAIL included with VISTA is
better than Outlook 2000 and you should have no problems. However, if you
are now trying to use WINDOWS MAIL after configuring OUTLOOK 2000 and have a
problem with WINDOWS CONTACTS try #2.

There are 2 files that are causing the problem. wab32.dll & wab32res.dll
First check that these two files are in the two following locations:

1) C:\windows\system32
2) C:\programfiles\commonfiles\system

If they are both there, so far, so good. Go into the C:\windows\system32
folder and find these two files. Rename wab32.dll to wab32old.dll and
wab32res.dll to wab32resold.dll. Leave the files in
C:\programfiles\commonfiles\system unchanged.

That's it!! Now, with WINDOWS MAIL you should be able to add to contacts and
use the contacts for picking email recepients.
