Using XP Home. Windows Update loaded SP3, and since then have trouble when
logout of a user account. It will not let me type in password for another
user account, or any account for that matter.

Any suggestions!

I would suspect a corrupt copy of winlogon.exe. You can replace that with
the command:
SFC /SCANNOW

Mark,

I tried your suggestion, but still cannot change user accounts. The initial
login after a system boot is the only one that will accept a password.

Probably your next best try is to create a new User ID to see if that works,
now that you have run SFC. It should be possible to copy old user settings
to new ID accounts. 811151 - How to Copy User Data to a New User Profile:

Mark,

Was going to try your suggestion tonight, but things seem to have magiacally
corrected themselves. Some automatic updates hit last night, so maybe a fix
was in one of them. Thanks for you help!

Sorry,

It appears I still have this problem. I've found that if I use the
work-around, ctr-alt-delx2, tjhat things are fixed. At least temporarily.
This problem occurs with all user accounts when logging-out.
