Hi,
I use WIndows XP home edition on my laptop. I had created only one
user account to login and was able to complete the login successfully
earlier. But now when I switch on the computer and windows get loaded
it shows the Xp welcome/login page where it prompts to select and
click on the user account to login. But icon for any user account
does not appear. Hence I am not able to login.
Earlier after switching on the windows used to log me in directly and
show the desktop after switching on the computer.
So somehow the setting for login/logout got changed and its not
picking up my user account.
It looks like the user account is deleted from registry and hence is
not able to locate while logging in.
Can anyone help me on this.

Either use administrators login from Safe Mode or press ctrl-alt-del twice
at welcome screen in normal mode (you may have to use administrators login.)

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have never set the Administrator password. When
I follow the steps to reach recovery console and when it ask for
Administrator password, If I leave it blank it says incorrect password
and asks to enter again.
Can you tell me what to do in this case.

Hi,
When I run the linux password change utility and reach the option for
changing User data and password, It does not find any users in the
registry and prompts to enter the user id. When I enter my user id it
rejects it saying "Not a valid user id". But infact that was the only
user account id created on this XP installation. It does not recognizes
even "Administartor". Looks like more than password the problem is that
windows\linux is not able to find the user account itself.
Apart from this , the linux utility has a capablity to change recovery
console parameters. Using that I could bypass Administrator password
requirement and completed the steps mentioned in
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_wel_screen.htm for copying
userinit.exe to wsaupdater.exe. But when I restarted the machine it
again is showing me the Windows welcome screen but no icon for user
name.

Have you tried using "Last know Good Configuration?"

I have tried "Last know Good Configuration" already but it still leads
to smae welcome page wit no icon for user account. I guess Windows is
starting correctly. Only thing is not able to find any user account.
Most of these links are to reset the password or create a password but
for each of these we need to have a user account.
Same with the linux utility. It said "No user exist in registry" on the
change password option.

You could try and replace the SAM Hive or follow the first step in article
307545.
"copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam" (no quotes)

hi,
Replacing the SAM from repair directory also did not help. Finally I
could take backup of my data files using an external drive onto another
computer and I restored the laptop to factory defaults and am back in
business. Though all the installation have to be done again but now
things are working fine.
