windows just keeps singing it's song

I'm having a problem with getting my laptop started.
Every time I start the system, it gets to the "Microsoft
Windows song" and gets stuck. I have tried everything I
know how to do - could this be a problem with the lap-top
or with the software? I really don't know - please help.
