Hi,
Whenever I run a program that uses the MS Windows Installer service, it
proceeds past the configuration choices like choosing the installation
directory, then when it starts installing it hangs. The progress bar
typically shows around 80% but it's instantaneous so I doubt it has done
much at this point (the installation directory is not even created). I can
click Cancel and it asks for confirmation, but after I confirm it does
nothing and no longer responds to clicking "Cancel" or the close button. If
I use task manager to do End Task (not end process), it does close the
window, but apparently the Windows Installer service is still running. After
this happens, if I try to restart my computer it hangs at "Windows is
shutting down" message so I have to use the hardware reset button.
This started happening a day or two ago and it seems to affect Windows
Installer itself because I have tried installing a few unrelated things
(including "Windows Installer Cleanup") but they all do the same thing. My
guess is that somehow some of the registry entries or files used by Windows
Installer have become corrupted and it doesn't handle this too well. I even
tried running System Restore but it hangs too after it tries to start the
restore. On the other hand, all my applications still work normally as far
as I know, so I don't think it's a more general problem with Windows.
I am using Windows XP Professional SP1 with all critical updates installed
(though the problem appears to affect Windows Update too). If nobody can
help I would appreciate pointers to other forums where I can ask for help.
Would I be charged for emailing or phoning MS support about this?
