Windows installer dosen't work

I am having problems installing windows XP updates as well as software for my
HP printer/scanner/fax. I have the feeling that the problem is with my
windows installer program, but can't verify this or figure out how to fix it.
Help or suggestions appreciated.

What are the problems you are having & what makes you think its a Windows
Installer issue?

Are there any Windows Installer error codes?

I have solved thr problem with the windows updates. It seems that the windows
BITS service was stopped, and after starting it the updates were downloaded
and installed with no problems. I am still having problems installing the HP
softwareand get the message "MSI failed with the return code 1601". as well
as the message "The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can
occur if you are running windows in safe mode or if windows installer is not
correctly installed. ......"
