Windows hardware detection not working properly

I have been thinking hard on how to describe my problem, while it is not a
system halting one it is annoying nevertheless.

Ok, now when you plug a device into your computer, and I’m talking USB, PCI,
FIREWIRE, or whatever, when windows knows what it is like an older digital
camera, it should find the appropriate drivers and install the device, right?
Well this is my problem. When I plug a device into my computer it
constantly asks where the drivers are located, and that is for each and every
part of the device as well as windows drivers for talking to the device. Now
every time the search for driver’s dialogue pops up I have to point it to the
“c:\windows\inf†folder and this will install the appropriate drivers.
However I know this should all be done automatically with no intervention
from me.

I first noticed the problem when I changed my system to an Intel 865PE
chipset board, now obviously I need to install the Intel Chipset drivers,
which I do, but I am wondering whether this is what is causing Windows XP to
constantly ask the location of drivers. I can remember not having this
problem at all on my old setup which ran on an ASUS A7V motherboard using VIA
chipset 4in1 drivers.

Another example of what I am talking about was when I installed my
Soundblaster Audigy ZS soundcard. Pop the card in; install the drivers from
the CD, which all works fine. Now when the drivers are on I am guessing that
windows finds and installs various components for windows to do things with
the soundcard, however I have to point it each and every time to the
“c:\windows\inf†folder when it installs things like “windows audio kernelâ€.

If someone could please shed some light on this problem I would be very very
grateful as I have had to put up with it for nearly a year now.

Heres my specs in case they are needed, be aware that this problem has
happened on every instance of Windows XP Pro, pre SP1, after SP1, and SP2

MSI 865PE Neo2 FISR Motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz Prescott HT
Corsair XMS 466 RAM 1Gig
Dual Maxtor 160Gig SATA in RAID0
NVidia Geforce 6800 Ultra
Soundblaster Audigy ZS 7.1
Windows XP Pro with SP2
Using latest Intel Chipset Drivers (version 6 I think)
