windows freezes at startup

W2K Pro starts up OK, asks me for my password, passes that
OK, then halts at screen labeled "loading personal
settings", although ribbon device does advance, at times,
very slowly. Before this happened my laptop (Dell Latitude
CPxJ 650) was working fine. At the time this happened, it
started the dark W2K screen OK but froze after the bottom
boxes were filled solid,; I restarted it; this time it
went to BSOD of "inaccessable boot up device"; another
restart; this time it went to "Run checkdisk - strongly
recommended"; it ran checkdisk and pronounced the volume
clean; after restart it seemed to be chugging along to a
normal start but began its current halt at LPS. I've tried
to run Recovery Console but am locked out because it asks
for an Administrator Password of which there ain't none,
so I can never enter the right one and, after 3 wrong
tries, it restarts the computer. MS's article on running
RC says if there's no Admin Password, just use "ENTER"
(which worked the only previous time that I needed to run
RC), but now it's received as a wrong entry. It also says
that if the SAM file is not accessable then I can't run RC
because I can't be verified. How do I get around the Admin
Password and run RC to attempt a repair? Better yet: How
do I get W2K to load my settings and continue on? Thanks.
