windows file protection

I receive an error message that says: Files that are required for Windows to
run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system
stability. Windows must restore the original versions of these files.
Insert your Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD now. When I hit more
info it says- possible reasons for this problem: You have inserted the wrong
CD or the CD ROM drive in your system is not functioning.
I only have a restore disk that came with the computer(its only 5
months old). Is this the CD I need or is there another fix I need to do.
The CD ROM is working. Thanks for any help.

You need to insert the XP slipstreamed CD (with SP2 integrated), when you're prompted for the disk. If you don't have the S-S CD, point to the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles folder after making this registry edit:

Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Backup the registry key to a REG file

Set the value of "ServicePackSourcePath" to "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles"

Restart and run SFC /Scannow.
