Windows File Protection message

I went to Performance & Maintenance and clicked Cleanup Disk, in the process
I received the following 'Windows File Protection' message.

Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by
unrecognized version. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the
original versions of the files. Insert your Windows XP Home Edition CD-Rom
now.

How do I fix the problem. I can not find the CD-Rom.

basically, the message is telling you
that the corrupted system files are no
good and needs the "genuine" files
from your cd.

you may have had or still have some kind
of malware that replaced or corrupted
your system files.

if you can find the win cd then you can
either do a "repair install" via the o.s.
setup when you boot

or

you can insert the win cd in the drive
then do a start > run > sfc /scannow

also, there are some computers
that are not provided win cd's.

you will have to
see if you pc came preinstalled with
windows or the o.s. was installed via
cd by calling the store or checking
the website for your make and model....
