Windows explorer slow opening when DCOM running

When DCOM is running, windows explorer takes one to 5 minutes to open (as
does my computer. Task manager shows no applications running nor any
significant cpu usage during the opening process (cpu usage less than 5% for
all processes). When DCOM is not running (as in running in safe mode or
stopping the DCOM service before restarting XP) window explorer pops right up
(less than two seconds) relieably.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately DCOM does appear to be necessary as
Windows installer and Norton AutoProtect cease functioning when DCOM is
stopped.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

There is not enough detailed info about your equipment or devices or network
to answer.

Truning off DCOM is like shutting down 40% of Windows Xp (and makinfg it
like Windows 95) and will stop many programs from functioning.

A 3rd party FW blocking port 135 out on the internet would be more logical.

Some cases of DCOM delay is the wireless or the UPnP timeouts?
Try stopping those if you don't need wireless or have any network.
