Windows Explorer & My Computer freeze up

Paul

Hi

One of microserfs recent updates has caused windows explorer and my computer
to freeze after anything between 2 and 10 minutes of being opened. I am
unable to do anything other than use task manager to crash out of it.
Everything else open is fine.

I have a dell dimension 5000 with 2mb ram, 160gb HDD, windows XP service
pack 2, zonealarm firewall and anti-virus

It is driving me crackers - can anyone help?

thanks in advance

Paul

And how have you determined that a "recent update" has caused this behavior?

What "recent updates" have you installed? Does uninstalling one or more of
them via Add/Remove Programs resolve the problem?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

behavior?

I haven't "determined" but IIRC it started after an update. As it is a
variable length of time it freezes, it did not become apparent for a
while - the first time this sort of thing happens one tends to ignore it
as "one of those things"

I install windows updates as they arrive

As stated in the original email Zonealarm firewall and antivirus. I run
adaware 2007 on a regular basis

Was there ever a resolution to this? I work for a big company and this has
been a persistent problem for me and many others. The company has not solved
the problem...its been a long time!

As for when this started, about 9 months ago, but completely different sw
than Paul, except for Windows XP.

One pattern I've seen is that after rebooting it occurs most requently, but
after ending the task a few times then it seems to happen a lot less
frequently.
This pattern has been destroyed in the last few days, as my company pushed
several security updates and a registry fix the "blue screen".

That's all I can say. Thanks.

Are you still having the problem?

Sometimes systems will have trouble after MS updates, but it is
usually not the update - it is something else on the system that is
out of date.

Since the issue tends to come up after MS updates, the assumption is
quick that MS is the problem. It might really be so, but usually it
just seems that way.

Is it a system lockup, BSOD or both?

Lockups and BSODs are not that hard to figure out if you have the
right information. They can be frustrating to the user when
resolution techniques involve guessing.

What task do you have to end a few times?

Sometimes, you have to uninstall certain updates, then fix the system
and reapply the update(s). Sometimes you that may require just
identifying the afflicted piece and fixing it so there is no conflict.

The fun part is identifying it, but some situations have been
recognized and with more information, maybe somebody will recognize
it.

MS comes out with updates the second Tuesday of the month, so you have
about 8 days until more come out!

Please provide additional information about your system.

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste
the information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name), and whatever appears to
be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted
information.

This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.
