Windows Explorer is unstable

Win XP SP2

Whenever starting Explorer, or selecting a large folder to display, my
desktop seems to spasm. It goes black and the icons all go generic, then
they slowly go back to the original good-looking ones one at a time.

This can happen randomly when using Explorer, but is frequent when selecting
big folders with music or pictures. Explorer may then freeze at which time
I have to Ctrl/Alt/Del, end Explorer, then restart it from TaskManager.

Heck! This is what computers are supposed to be designed for. How can I
improve Windows Explorer's performance?

The computer is relatively recent, has 256MB RAM, 80 GB harddrive less than
1/2 full, 1662 Mhz AMD Athlon, so it is not special, but should be able to
handle more than a thousand files at a time.

I'll go to WinXP.Basic if that's where this question belongs. Thanks

Consider some of these:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Line 121. Increase Icon Cache

Line 157. Prevent Automatic Folder and Icon Refresh - Enable

Line 2. Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000
